Pre NCT Check

Pre NCT Check

What Is An NCT?

The National Car Test (NCT) is a compulsory vehicle inspection program in Ireland. It’s a check of basic requirements that are visible and accessible at the time of the test.

The NCT was introduced in 2000 as a preventative safety measure that ensures vehicles using Irish roads are in sound working order, complying with the EU Directive, which makes car testing compulsory in EU member states. The Directive is aimed primarily at improving road safety and enhancing environmental protection, The NCT fee for a full test is €55 (€54.10 from 01/09/2020) and a re-test costs €28.

  • Full NCT Inspection of vehicle

  • Light focusing
  • Car Wash

How can I best prepare for the NCT and what documents should I bring?

  1. Please steel oneself against the test by ensuring that:
  2. Your car has adequate oil and water.
  3. The boot is empty and seats are beyond personal belongings like removable baby seats. If the baby seat is left within the car for the NCT, it’ll be checked that it’s fitted correctly.
  4. The vehicle is fairly clean (especially the under body).
  5. The wheel hubcaps are removed (only within the case where the wheel nuts aren’t visible) and therefore the tires are inflated to the right pressure.
  6. The engine is during a fit state to be tested e.g. Cam belt/timing belt. you’ll be asked to sign a disclaimer at the test centre.
  7. Seat belts and clips are fully visible.
  8. Your registration plates suits current regulations.
  9. NCTS recommend that you simply have your lights checked and set before the NCT.
  10. Please make sure you bring identification (Driving licence or Passport only) with you as you’ll be asked to supply this when presenting your vehicle for inspection at the test centre.

Please ensure your vehicle is at a traditional operating temperature before arriving at the test centre for inspection.

Benefits Of NCT Testing

NCT testing will spot potentially dangerous issues or defects. NCT also helps to reduce the number of road accidents by pointing out such flaws as faulty brakes, worn tyres, and defective headlight aim.

Some benefits of NCT testing include:

  1. Safer, more reliable cars
  2. Longer vehicle service life
  3. Reduced fuel consumption
  4. Reduced air and noise pollution
  5. Avoidance of penalty points
